Read what happens when a Nigerian guy gives flower, teddy bear to a lady as gifts
Men and women who give flowers are perceived as being strong, capable and courageous with a view of being appreciative of beauty and nature.
While a teddy bear naturally projects love and care because of its soft and comfort features, flowers depict love and affection towards the recipient.
Ironically, in Nigeria, majority object to this due to our beliefs and culture. A man or woman who presents any of these two items tend to be looked at differently.
Abiola Atoyebi carried out a survey and came up with the following results:
1. A lady tends to belittle the strength of a man, especially if the flower is not accompanied with a sustainable item while a guy sees a lady who gives him a teddy bear as a toddler.
2. They believe flowers are time bound, the appreciation of a flower is believed to be timely since our weather doesn’t encourage its preservation, while men see teddy presentation as an attribute reserved for the female folks.
3. When presented with just a flower, it dampens one’s mood. This is in spite of the psychological belief that receiving flowers as a gift is a natural mood enhancer.
4. It forces a fake smile and quarrelsome words. Whereas flowers ought to bring out true smiles, delight, happiness and positive words. This is also applicable to men in their disposition towards received teddy bears.
5. It could cause a lady to freak out or pass a different message, especially to a female business partner; forgetting that flowers could be used to enhance business friendship.
Interestingly, there are other objective reasons some of the respondents suggest would not allow them welcome flowers as gifts.
“See flower is not an African culture, it is a perishable item because I believe in sustainable item as gifts,” one of the interviewees said.
Another male respondent added: “what was she thinking? How can she give me a teddy bear?”
