Minister Denies Role in Secret MTN N50 Billion Deal, Names Attorney General

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, on Monday confirmed the Federal Government received N50 billion from MTN Nigeria towards the settlement of the N780 billion fine imposed on the telecoms firm.

The confirmation came as the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, denied any role in either negotiating with MTN or directing or receiving the N50 billion from the company.

MTN said last week it had withdrawn its lawsuit challenging the fine, and that it had paid N50 billion to the government.

The National President, Constance Shareholders Association of Nigeria (CSAN), Mr Shehu Mikail, on Monday urged all bank users to join ‘No Banking Day’ protest on March 1.
Mikail made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He spoke in support of the scheduled protest against Excessive Bank Charges organised by Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CAFON) and Coalition of Nigerian Consumer Protection Association.
Mikail said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had directed all commercial banks to charge customers N50 on deposits from N1, 000 and above, as part of Nigeria’s stamp duties law on financial transactions.
“Apart from the above, there are other silent charges administered by Nigerian banks’’ he said.

Lassa fever has claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy in Ebonyi State.

The death is the second confirmed case recorded in the state since the recent outbreak across the country. The commissioner for Health, Daniel Umezuruike, confirmed the death.

The Scandalous spectacle called ‘2016 Federal Budget’ proposal resonated a couple of days ago when President Muhammadu Buhari formally declared that the document was padded by entrenched interests. Buhari spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in Saudi Arabia. “…It is very embarrassing and disappointing. We will not allow those who did it to go unpunished”, he said. The President had presented a budget proposal of N6.08 trillion to a joint Session of the National Assembly for approval on December 22, 2015; made up of N4.2 trillion (70%) recurrent expenditure and N1.8 trillion (30%) capital expenditure components. The revenue projection was N3.86 trillion, meaning the budget was in deficit of N2.22 trillion, which the President originally hoped to finance with domestic and foreign borrowing to the tunes of N984 billion and N900 billion, respectively. Initially, critics of the budget were mainly piqued by the budget’s deficit threshold and some expenditure heads generally considered as non-prioritised, frivolous or profligate.

More than a year after its national was kidnapped in Abuja, the Nigerian Capital, the British Government on Monday, raised the alarm over his whereabouts, calling for his release.

Fuel Scarcity Spreads to Kaduna, Other States

The ease of getting petrol by motorists and other residents in Kaduna has become more difficult as long queues resurfaced in the state capital and other parts of the state.

An (IGB)Reader monitored the situation within the state capital, reported that long queues have taken over the few filling stations in the city, selling the petrol as motorists besiege the outlets to get the product for their respective uses.
Motorists and commercial tricycle operators were seen struggling to get into the station as only two out of the ten pumps were dispensing product to customers.

According to reports, Etiti an indigene of Agwa in Oguta Local Government Area of the state, is a secondary school drop out and was a wheelbarrow pusher before he got the ‘call’, had allegedly deceived Udoka into marrying him after she went to him to seek God’s intervention over whom to choose out of three suitors who wanted to marry her including a medical doctor, a fellow banker and a public servant.
But Etiti told her that none of them men was the chosen one for her except himself, and she ended up marrying him.

NATCOM Consortium, the company that acquired moribund fixed line operator Nigerian Telecommunications (NITEL) and its mobile subsidiary M-Tel last year, has made its first voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) test call in Lagos, ahead of a planned commercial launch of its ntel-branded services in the near future. Local newspaper Business Day reports that the call was completed in partnership with Sweden’s Ericsson and Sony Electronics of Japan.

Following the resurgence of militant activities in the Niger Delta region, the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt said it had trained about 200 soldiers to carry out special marine operations and rescue missions in the area.

NNPC Takes Delivery of Four Cargoes of Petroleum Products

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it had taken delivery of four more cargoes of petroleum products over the weekend to keep the country wet.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Ohi Alegbe, NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, on Sunday in Abuja.

Scarcity of petrol in Lagos and other major cities across the country has forced an increase in the pump price of the product. It is now selling at N120 per litre.

Eight persons were reportedly killed over the weekend by some hoodlums in Yeghe, Gokana Local government areas, and other parts of Rivers State.
It could be recalled that almost 30 people were killed with four of them beheaded in Omoku, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local government area of the state earlier in the month of February.
In the weekend attack, a victim simply identified as Chika was shot dead by suspected assassins at his resident in Ozuaha community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ex-aide-de-camp Col. Ojogbane Adegbe and two other army officers will be interrogated by a military panel, The PUNCH has learnt.

It was learnt in Abuja on Sunday that the military authorities would this week set up a panel to interrogate the three officers on their roles in the $2.1bn arms scam.

Saturday PUNCH had exclusively reported on February 27 that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had handed over Adegbe to the military authorities.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will on Monday (today) arraign a former Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, told our correspondent in a terse message that Moro would be charged on 11 counts bordering on obtaining money by false pretences, procurement fraud and money laundering before Justice Chikere.

Appeal court truck crushes man, two sons to death in Edo

Tragedy struck at Ofumwengbe in Ovia South West local government area of Edo state at the weekend as a truck crushed a father of five and his two sons.
Mr Joseph Adeke, a farmer. and his two sons 15-year-old Jeffrey and Ovie (13) were crushed by a truck owned by an Abuja Federal Court of Appeal.

Chinese authorities have suspended more than 580 social media accounts, including those of popular commentators, for spreading rumours, confusing people or going against the constitution.
A statement issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said the suspended accounts include those of “celebrities” on the popular microblog Weibo who had thousands of followers.
It accused them of “ignoring their social responsibilities, abusing their influence, staining the honour of the state and disrupting social order”.
