The south south town hall meeting organized by the Ministry of Information and Culture held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital on Monday, June 13.
At the meeting, the Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi and Minister for state for Petroleum Resources Ibe Kachikwu disagreed over the establishment and maintenance of the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta state.

Amaechi said he was in support of the decision of administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to scrap the project.
He said the previous administration of Goodluck Jonathan had paid too much to acquire a site for the university and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should recover the N13 billion already paid for the land and he will build the university for them.

“What to do: let EFCC retrieve the money and release the money and we build the university. If they bring the N13 billion, I will build the university for them. That’s for land alone. I believe the federal government does not have money. When we have money, we can continue. The minister of petroleum has said he would look for the money. Minister, give me the money and we continue.”
However, Kachikwu disagreed with Amaechi, saying he was in support of the project and this drew a loud applause from the audience.
“I disagree with the minister of transport. Any facility in the South-south, we should work towards developing it, I don’t care the circumstance. It is not my business whether land was valued at 19 or 10 million.
“We’ll deal with the issues but the university will be developed. If he (Amaechi) doesn’t want it in maritime, I will take it in Petroleum,” the minister said.
Amaechi has now come under harsh criticisms for his statement at the town hall meeting. Some said it was a blatant disregard for the people while others described him as a disaster to Buhari’s government.
