7 facts you didn’t know about Amodu Shuaibu

Tragedy has struck twice in three days as another former coach of the Super Eagles, Amodu Shuaibu died in the early hours of today, June 11. This coming barely 72 hours after the nation lost a legend, Stephen Keshi.
Until his death, the Edo-born coach was the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation.
It Was gathered that Shuaibu was said to have complained of heart problems yesterday, June 10, before his death.
Sources told our reporter that he went to sleep and was discovered dead about 4am. His body is being moved from the Stella Obasanjo hospital in Benin to his home town in Okpella, where he will be buried today according to Muslim rites in his home town, Okpella in Edo state. He died at the age of 58.

Although, some may not know, it is noteworthy that Amodu contributed his quota to the development of football in Nigeria before his death.
Below are some facts you probably didn’t know about him:
1. Despite his achievements as Super Eagles coach (two bronze medals at the Nation’s cup), Amodu Shuaibu had a turbulent relationship with Nigerian football fans and his employers, as he was been referred to as a caretaker coach by his critics.
2. Under his stewardship, Nigeria qualified for the 2002 and 2010 World Cup but he was sacked despite the team’s third-place finish at the Nation’s cup in both years. He was removed twice from his post ahead of a World Cup finals tournament.
3. He was appointed technical director of Nigeria’s national teams in May 2013.
4. Before his death, Shuaibu had five spells in charge of the Super Eagles.
5. Amodu played as a striker for Dumez and Niger Tornadoes. His playing career ended after he broke his leg.
6. Some of the club sides Amodu coached in the past both in Nigeria and overseas include: Shooting Stars, BCC Lions, El Kanemi Warriors, Sharks F.C and Orlando Pirates of South Africa.
7. In November 2014, he was appointed into the Technical Director position of the Nigeria Football Federation. The decision to appoint the tactician was made after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for AFCON 2015 after being held to a 2-2 draw by South Africa.
