Fire
outbreak on Monday night razed down a section of the female hostel of
the Yelwa campus of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi State.
The
Public Relation Officer of the University,Zalani Bappa, who confirmed
the incident said four rooms in the hostel were affected by the inferno.
He
said no life was lost but the students lost all their belongings to
fire before the arrival of men of the state fire service.
According
to Zailani, the management of the university was still investigating
the cause of the incident as nobody could trace what triggered the fire.
He
said an alternative accommodation by the university has been made for
those whose rooms were affected and appealed to the outside communities
to avoid burning bushes close to the university.
Also,
the information officer of the state fire service Abubakar Bala said
that the fire incident started around 10.00 pm on Minday when students
were preparing for their exams.
He said four of the
hostels and a toilet were seriously affected and attributed the cause of
the fire outbreak to a gas cooker allegedly mounted by a female
student after investigation.
He
said it was improper for students to use such cooking gadgets in the
hostel, adding that the number properties affected was yet to be
ascertained.
Abubakar said it took the combine effort of Tatari Ali and federal polytechnic fire fighting vehicles to put out the fire.
“The
prompt response of the fire service and residents living close to the
university yielded positive results as the fire did not extended to
other rooms at the hostel,” he said
He
urged residents to desist from castigating fire service staff and
appealed to the government to equip the fire station in the state to
avert future occurrences of fire outbreaks.
